ACHLADOKAMBOS (Village) ARGOLIS
The small monastery which can be found 7 km from Ayios Andreas cannot easily be seen from a distance since it is situated for safety purposes in a ravine of gigantic plane trees which offer shade and cool water. The monastery cells are ruinous. The church has been repaired with a pitched tiled roof and an apse in the sanctuary. Written evidence exists from 1792 up to 1833, when it is abandoned.

Half way from Palaiochori to Ayios Vassileios on a tree covered slope we can make out the ruins of the stronghold of the Monastery of the Archangel. The church, as is characteristic of many others found in Cynuria and other places, is an octagonal, domed, cruciform single-aisled structure. There are wall paintings, presumably damaged by the fire set by Ibrahim (Pasha). Written evidence exists dating from 1744 to 1834, when it is abandoned. Two bishops of the successive Metropolis of 'Reondos Prastou', Iakovos and Dionysios, are involved in the life of the monastery, an example of its role in the Cynurian life of the period.

EPIDAVROS (Municipality) ARGOLIS
At first, this was a retreat by a monk, early 15th century, from the monastery of Agnoudos. Later on the monk and his students built up the monastery of the Madonna of "Polemarxa". Today there are some ruins around the monastery. We can see the cells of the monastery and the water wells. Although the monastery is unfinished we can see clearly the symmetry of the vaulted roof and the sound pots around the cells. The monastery of Madonna of "Polemarxa" is abandoned because of a scourge of pirates.

IERA MONI LOUKOUS (Monastery) ARCADIA
Tel: +30 27550 41260
The
monument lies to the NW of Astros, in the area of ancient Thyreatis, which is full of antiquities. It was probably built on the site of an Early Christian church of the 5th century AD. The catholicon is a domed church of the composite four columned, cross-in-square type. It is decorated with fine wall paintings and its floor is paved with coloured marble slabs. The wall masonry imitates a careless "cloisonne", and includes ancient architectural parts and brick ornaments. The iconostasis (chancel barrier) is decorated with portable icons dated to the 17th century.
The first literary reference to the monastery is in the "Geographica" of Meletios, the Metropolitan Bishop of Athens in 1690. The English traveller J. Leake visited the monastery in 1805.
Regarding the name "Loukou", several theories have appeared:
the monastery was dedicated to St. Lucia,
it was due to the ancient cult of Hera (Juno Lucina),
it was named Lykou after the wolves (lykoi) living in the area,
the monastery was dedicated to St. Luke,
it was related to the "Lucus Feroniae"(woods of prey) in which
the Villa of Herodes Atticus was located.
The roof of the catholicon (main church) has been retiled, the two-storeyed
tower has been supported and the cells have been restored. In the 1980's the painted
decoration of the church was systematically preserved and in 1994-95 the mosaic
floor of the catholicon was restored. Today the monument is a convent for nuns.

The monastery of Sintza (fig tree), perched on the red cliffs SW of Leonidio seems unapproachable. Among the huge cliffs, the visitor can see the snow-white cells, the domed cross-in-square katholikon with the carved iconostasis and the icons dating back from 1650. The first written evidence of the history of the monastery dates back from 1628. Today it is a nunnery. In Loutraki, near the Health center, the Holy Cloister of Christ’s
Resurrection dominates the surroundings. The cloister, which used to be a convent
from 1930 until 1990, was erected in honor of a blessed icon of the Christ’s
Resurrection with the engraving “1834 December 20”. It belonged to
the founder and first confessor at the cloister, a Cretan gentleman, Mr. Kyros
Ignadios Pedarakis.
The sanctuary dedicated to the Christ’s Holy Resurrection, can
be found in the interior, which is surrounded by protective stonework. Its architecture
style is basilica with a double casted timbered roof. In the interior of the sanctuary
are the unique ornamental wood-engraved temple and of Athos style chandelier.
A number of exceptional icons dating back to the early century detailed
in Mount Athos, are well
preserved. Amongst them is the icon of Our Most Holy Lady Gorgoepikoou. Apart
from the sanctuary in the cloister two more oratories can be found. One dedicated
to our Lady Protector and the other dedicated to Saint Elefterios where sacred
relics of the Saint are devoutly kept.
On Easter day there is a glorious celebration, on Easter Monday a
feast full mass in honor of Christ’s Resurrection.
Since 1990 a brotherhood has been established that lives in obedience
to Christ’s Rules, following the Holy Canons of monastic life, as they have
been settled by the Fathers of the Church in compliance with Christ’s commands:
“love Lord .... this is the prime command. Second to this, love thy neighbor
as yourself”.

above Loutraki and offering a superb view of the Gulf
of Corinth. Το the left of the threshold of the monastery is a little chapel,
while above the main entrance is a painting of Our Lady “Wider than the
Heavens”. The southeast side is occupied by the catholicon, built in 1963.

We continue along the same road and, passing the turning for Hosios
Patapios, we come to the monastery of St Gerasimos. Around the precinct are
the guest-rooms of the monastery, the guesthouse proper, the waiting rooms and
a little chapel of Our Lady “Eleftherotria”. Outside the west wing
stands a stone cross 13 meters in height; which is lit at night. According to
the tradition, it was on this very spot that a pious clergyman met St Gerasimos
himself; the saint was holding a large cross and throwing firecrackers.
Close to the monastery is the little chapel of St Panteleimon, built
in 1981 on the foundations of an earlier church.
In the center of the city of Loutraki
is the Cathedral dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The first building, which
was founded on February 1st 1886, was destroyed by an earthquake. The present
Church was built in the same place in 1933 and founded by His Reverence Metropolite
Damaskinos on April 10, 1933. The style of the church based on a study by Orlando,
is a three-aisle basilica with its middle aisle raised in order to obtain plenty
and natural sunlight. The hagiography is exceptional and according to Byzantine
style. This can be seen in the masterpiece of the Most Holy Virgin Mother in the
middle niche of the sanctuary is dated prior to 1930s. In the church there are
some portable holy icons and delicated wood-carved holy icon-stands of Saint John
the Baptist and Osios Patapios.

What is called the “German road” leads east of Loutraki
and after 10 km. of fine scenery brings us to the nunnery of the Holy Trinity,
set amid the serenity of the verdant forest. The nunnery was founded in 1962 on
a site which since 1933 had been occupied by a chapel built by the nun Christodoule.
It is a dependency of Esphigmenou Monastery on Mt
Athos, and follows the Old Calendar: Today there are seven nuns.
Nearby are the chapels of Our lady “Zoodochos Piyi” (1969),
of Sts Cosmas and Damien, and of Our lady “Aghia Skepe”. Also in the
vicinity is the spot known as Golgotha, where there are schematic depictions of
the divine drama.

It is one of the most important monasteries in Laconia. The catholicon
(main church), a triconch domed church of the Athonite type, was erected in 1620.
The walls of the naos and narthex are covered with frescos
painted by Georgios Moschos. The church of Zoodochos Pighi (the Holy Virgin, Source
of Life) was built to the north of the catholicon in 1707.
During the Byzantine period the centre of the worship of the Fourty
Martyrs was the cave-like church, originally used as the catholicon of the old
monastery. The new monastery was founded by abbot Cyprian and the monks Parthenios
and Theodosios. During the Turkish occupation the monastery came under the direct
jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and gained privileges and many metochia
(estates). Significant was its contribution to the education of the enslaved Greeks.
The north wing of the building with the cells has already been restored
and work will soon be completed in the east and south wings. Systematic work for
the consolidation, restoration, and cleaning of the wall paintings was begun in
1985. Today the monastery is used as a convent for monks.
Many other important Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments have been
located in the vicinity of Chrysapha, including the church of Panaghia (Our Lady)
Chrysaphitissa, the church of the Dormition of the Virgin, the church of St. Demetrios,
and the church of St. Nicholas.

The new Monastery of Philosophos, which was built in order to replace
the earlier, Byzantine one, lies in the western part of the Lousios gorge and
was founded at the middle of the 17th century. The catholicon (main church) is
a cross-in-square domed church of the composite, four-column type, with plain
facades and poor brickwork decoration. The
wall paintings inside the church are dated to 1663 and are the work of Victor,
a representative of the Cretan School. The church also has an impressive wooden-carved
iconostasis.
The new catholicon was built by the monks of the new monastery and
was painted at the expense of Mavraidis Pasha from Stemnitsa. From the mid-17th
to the mid-18th century the new monastery housed the school of the Gortyn clergy
which was attended by important people of the Church (e.g. Patriarch Gregory V).
Between 1834 and 1836 the monastery was abolished with the decision of the Bavarian
regency, its property was confiscated and sold to individuals.
The building of the cells to the SW of the catholicon has been consolidated
and restored and access passages have been constructed by the Archaeological Service.
The north wing of the cells building and the catholicon are going to be restored
soon. Today, the monastery is used as a convent for monks, and is a department
of the Monastery of Timios Prodromos (St. John the Forerunner) at Stemnitsa.
Many religious buildings have been located in the gorge of Lousios,
including churches, monasteries, hermitages as well as secular buildings such
as water-mills, gunpowder-mills, tobacco-mills etc. Some of the most important
religious buildings are the Old Monastery of Panaghia (Our Lady) Philosophou,
built in the 10th century, the Monastery of Timios Prodromos, dated to the end
of the 16th century, the Monastery of Aimyales, the old and new monastery of Atsicholos
and St. Andrew at Gortyna.

MONI DIMIOVIS (Monastery) KALAMATA
The Monastery of Dimiova is 10 km east of Kalamata on the slopes of Taygetos and was built in the 8th century by the byzantine emperor Leonda the 3rd, the Isavro. It reached its heyday in the 15th century and was destroyed in 1463 during the war between the Turks and the Eneti. The contemporary Monastery was built in the 17th century and has woodcurved reredos made in 1773 while its church was painted in fresco in 1663. The miracle icon of the Virgin Mary the Timiovitissa is in the Monastery. This icon, according to tradition, was struck by an axe on the face and bled. It is celebrated on the 15th August, when a host of visitors from Kalamata and the surrounding area visit the Monastery from the day before, in order to attend the vespers and the service.
