IERA MONI PROUSSOU (Monastery) EVRYTANIA
It is one of the few monasteries saved in Evrytania. It consists of the church and one wing with cells.
The church honoured to Mary (Panagia) Proussiotissa is in the cross - domed type and dates to 1754. In the West side of the church there is a crypt adjusted to be used as a parekklesion. The frescoes created by the painters G. Georgiou and G. Anagnostou date to 1785. Frescoes of the 13th century are also saved in the external west side of the crypt, while in the internal we can distinguish two phases, one of which dates to 1518. A remarkable wood - carved iconostasis, dated to 1810, decorates the crypt.
The monastery church (katholikon) has been restored and the frescoes
have been conserved.
Nowadays it is used as a monastery.
According to tradition, it's founding is placed in the era of the iconoclast emperor Theofilos 829-842 a.d. and is associated with the appearance of the holy icon of the Virgin from Proussa of Vithinia in the near east in the cave of Euritania. The first half of the 9th century has been established as the founding date. The monastery has suffered many catastrophes and has been set on fire by many invaders, the last being the Germans on August 16 1944. Notable are the monastery clock which is perched on a small hill and the chapel of Agion Panton opposite the monastery which was built in 1754. South of Agion Panton the famous "School of Greek Letters", a Superior school of letters, still survives. An interesting museum operates in the Monastery featuring manyh exhibits, such as manuscript codices, typeset books, a sword from 1821 that may have belonged to Karaiskaki as well as many old vestments.

At the north East End of this town, and at a distance of one kilometer
lies, deeply fixed in time (11th century), the Byzantine Holy Monastery of Agios
Georgios. Up to 1599 the Temple was dedicated to Iperagia Theotoko (Mother of
God). Today, only the Catholic Monastery remains in existence after the earthquakes,
as well as some of its auxiliary buildings (Vordonaria, Fotanama, etc). At this
landscape, the new Monastery was built. The Holy Temple is of stone, of Byzantine
style and round the forecourt are built the cells and its auxiliary rooms.

At about 12 km southerly of Rovies
and 21 km from the provincial capital of Limni
Community, there is the historical Convent of Holy David, the so called "Old
Man", built on the foot of Kavalaris Mountain (called in another way, Dry
Mountain) and an altimeter of 500 meters. The Convent was built in half of
the 16th century by Holy David himself, on the pre-existent ruins of the ancient
church of Christ's Transfiguration.
During the years of 1821 Revolution against the Turks, the Convent
supported actively the fight and assisted the Leader Captain Angelis Rovios, as
this results from the historic records kept in the Convent. This is the reason
that it was destroyed by Turks in 1823.
In 1877 it was reconstructed and so has continued its living till
today, in the form of a men's convent. Many chapels are built round the Convent,
with the Saint's cavernous hermitage located to the western point, "Agiokeri"
to the southern point, in sites of highest beauty.
In the underground chapel of the Convent's cells, in memory of Saints
Anargyroi, there are wonderful wall paintings of the 17th century.
Recently the figure of the deceased superior of the Convent enviable
father Jacob, was assimilated to the Convent, the world and the devoutness, and
the worshipers don't omit to pay a visit to his grave. The Convent, which was
restored today, welcomes a number of faithful throughout the year.

The first monastery, according to tradition, was built in the 11th century and was destroyed 300 years later. The second was built in 1556. Kourt Pasha destroyed the monastery in 1823, because at times it sheltered various great teachers and thousands of rebels. The third monastery was re-built from 1841 to 1844 by Bavarian engineer officers under Otto's orders. The complete destruction of the monastery happened in 1963 after a landslide in the area. In 1970 and 500 metres away from the old monastery, the new one was built. In spite of all the adventures and catastrophes, many rare and valuable holy relics were saved. It has a library with 633 texts. As well, some noteworthy texts from 1544-1578 have survived, having been published in Vienna, Venice and other European cities and the mosaic icon "The King of Glory" which dates from 1350.
