Monastery of St. John of Kallergi

KASTELI (Village) HERAKLIO
About 5 km NW of Kasteli, a sign on the road indicates the way to the Monastery of Kallergi, a lovely place, shady and cool, full of flowers. The church of Aghios Ioannis was renovated in 1912, according to the inscription on the belfry, but bears obvious architectural elements belonging to earlier dates.
The abbot Methodios Perakis bought the monastery in 1874 from the larger monastery of Vidiani in the Lassithi plateau. There are traces of monks having lived here at a much earlier date, and according to M. Karavelakis, the present building was erected ca. 1850 on the ruins of an older one.
The monastery was abandoned after its 1912 renovation, and a fire completed its destruction in 1931, burning down over 800 trees. Nowadays, the ancient church is in reasonably good condition and the main building has been restored, with the vaulted SW part turned into a refectory. There is a newer church built just outside the precincts of the monastery.

Monastery of the Virgin at Agarathos

MONI AGARATHOU (Monastery) THRAPSANO

The Agarathos Monastery is 23km from Iraklion on an exit at 8km of the Iraklion - Agios Nikolaos highway. This women's convent, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, is one of the oldest monasteries in Crete. Manuscripts in the British Museum, dated 1559, provide evidence that it had an important library then. During Venetian times this monastery, as well as Agia Ekaterini in Iraklion, were educational centres and provided instruction for many important scholars. The name of the monastery comes from Agarathia, which means Jerusalem Sage because it is believed that an icon of the Panagia was found in this spot under a Jerusalem Sage bush. The church of the monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. When the Turks invaded the island the icon of the Panagia and other valuables were sent by the Abbot to Kithera for protection. Many inscriptions in the monastery date from the Venetian era, although the present church is new.

Monastery of St. John at Anopolis

MONI AGIOU IOANOU TOU THEOLOGOU (Monastery) GOUVES
Tel: +30 2810 781349
The monastery is located in a small distance south east of Anopolis in a tree covered valley. It was first a part of the Saint George monastery located by the mouth of Aposelemis river a few kilometers to the north, but around 15th - 16th century the monks due to the raids of the pirates moved from Saint George’s monastery to the monastery of Saint John taking with them the icon of the Saint which exists until today.
During the Turkish occupation a "secret school" has been operating at the monastery which was also a base of the rebellions against the invaders.
The monks of the monastery and the people of Anopolis paid for their activities when in July 1896 the Turks slaughtered them and ruined the monastery. A cross stands at the top of the overlooking hill to remind this massacre.
The monastery was refounded by Kalinikos Daskalakis (1904 - 1936).
