Athens International Airport (AIA) is celebrating 25 years since its inauguration in 2001 as Greece’s main gateway, having welcomed more than 430 million passengers during this period. AIA handles approximately 40% of Greece’s total air traffic and benefits from its strategic location in the Attica region, with a catchment area of around six million people. It serves as a hub connecting Greece with the rest of the world, with more than 70 airlines flying to over 174 destinations across 55 countries. In 2025 passenger traffic reached a historic high of 34 million, representing a 6.6% increase compared with the previous year.
In recognition of its performance, AIA has received more than 100 international distinctions, including 24 awards for airline development and network promotion. Notably, in 2025, it was named the world’s leading airport at the Routes World Awards and received the ACI EUROPE “Best Airport Award” in the category for airports handling between 25 and 40 million passengers. In 2026, it won the Routes Europe Marketing Award in the category for airports handling more than 20 million passengers, for its marketing strategy and initiatives aimed at developing the Athens market.
Sustainability is a core strategic pillar for AIA. The airport has integrated sustainable development into its operations, balancing aviation growth with environmental and social responsibility. AIA achieved a net zero greenhouse-gas emissions balance in December 2025, fulfilling its “Route 2025” initiative 25 years ahead of the European target of 2050. Since January 2026, all the Airport Company’s electricity needs have been met exclusively by clean, renewable energy generated on site.
Athens International Airport is a key economic accelerator and plays a vital role in Greece’s economy, supporting business activity, tourism, trade and employment. It contributes approximately €8.6 billion, or 3.8%, to the country’s GDP, around €2.7 billion to public revenues, and supports approximately 214,000 jobs, representing 4.2% of domestic employment.
In February 2024, AIA was listed on the Athens Stock Exchange, attracting new investors and highlighting the airport’s importance as a major investment asset for Greece. The airport has a long-term expansion plan involving investments of approximately €1.3 billion, aimed at increasing its capacity to serve 40 million passengers annually by 2033.

Kythira Airport is located in Sympetra area, close to Friligianika village. The distance from Kythira town is 17 km. The first landing was on a small dirt, then, road took place on December 20, 1971. As year, however, of airport formal operation is 1972.
The new runway, 1480m x 30m its size, opened in 1988 and the new premises, lying in a total area of 1720m, run since 2003.
