Michael Choniates (Acominatus)

Member of the celebrated Byzantine Acominatus family and brother of the officer and historian Nicetas Choniates. He was born in Chonae (ancient Colossae) and was educated in Constantinople. He was the metropolitan of the city of Athens from 1182 till 1204 and his work constitutes a historical source for the city during that era. Michael Choniates left Athens, after its capture by the Franks in 1204, for the island of Cea, and died in the Monastery of Ioannis Prodromos, near Mendenitsa, Locris.
