The exhibition is housed on the ground floor of a three-storeyed
Neoclassical
building which was donated to the Greek state and was partly used as a museum
after 1938.
The collections of the museum include:
Sculptures from Patras and the surrounding area.
Various finds spanning the period between 3000 B.C. and 800 B.C.
Groups of burial finds from the Classical and Hellenistic cemeteries of
Patras.
Finds of the Roman period from Patras.
The most important items of the exhibition are:
Mycenaean silver
kylix. It is decorated with figure-of-eight shields executed in repousse.
It was found at
Katarraktis
and dates from the 15th century B.C. (LH II).
Shallow cup.
The inside bears painted decoration of fish. It was found at Klaus and dates from
the mid-13th century B.C. (LH IIIB:2).
Bronze greaves.
Pair of bronze greaves decorated with bands from a Mycenaean tomb at
Kallithea,
Patras. Dated to the 12th century B.C.
Clay models of
granaries. Three small cylindrical models of granaries with conical roofs,
from the Geometric temple at
Ano
Mazaraki. Dated to the last quarter of the 8th century B.C.
Gold necklace.
It is made of spool-shaped beads and the ends are in the shape of lynx-heads
with conical necks. Dated to the Late Hellenistic period.
Statue of Athena.
Roman copy of the gold and ivory statue of Athena Parthenos which stood inside
the Parthenon on the Athenian Acropolis. The goddess holds a shield decorated
with a representation of Amazonomachy.
