Douloufakis Winery is a family-owned estate with a history dating back to 1930. It is located in the village of Dafnes, near the city of Heraklion in Crete, at the heart of the homonymous wine appellation zone. The area boasts a rich viticultural tradition and has been officially recognized as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). It is here that the red wine PDO Dafnes is produced exclusively from the indigenous Liatiko grape variety.
From grandfather to father and then to son, the Douloufakis family has maintained an uninterrupted involvement in viticulture and the production of quality wines.
Today, the winery is run by Nikos Douloufakis, a third-generation winemaker. He studied oenology in Piedmont, Italy, a region where wine has been elevated to a science and a deeply rooted tradition. From the outset, his main objective was the restructuring of the family vineyards and the modernization of the winery.
The estate-owned vineyards cover 25 hectares and are situated at an altitude of approximately 350 meters above sea level, on hillside slopes with limestone soils. Nikos Douloufakis’ philosophy focuses both on highlighting local grape varieties such as Liatiko, Kotsifali, Vilana, Vidiano and Tahtas, and on cultivating international varieties including Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.
The winery is a small yet modern and meticulously designed winemaking facility. Its cellar houses approximately 300 oak barrels used for the ageing of red wines. Open to visitors throughout the year, the winery welcomes wine lovers from around the world, offering them the opportunity to experience firsthand the mystique of winemaking.
