Maritime Museum of Oinousses - Overview

The Museum of Oinousses mirrors the long and rich maritime tradition of this border island. Its visitors will have the chance to travel back in time, when the sailing ships of Oinousses crossed the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, and their worthy captains thrived in trade and navigation.
The contemporary building and exhibition area have been renovated and expanded thanks to Nicholaos S. Lemos’ enthusiasm and generosity, who continued the long tradition of beneficence of his family.
The museum exhibition narrates the transition from sailing- to steamships up to the post-war contemporary fleets, unfolding a great maritime history that remains the emblem of the island. The collections on display include:
• A remarkable series of ship models that represent a time span from the 18th century to date. Of particular interest are the models made by French prisoners held by the British during the Napoleonic wars.
• A collection of weapons derived from battlefields or left behind by travelers of the 18th and 19th centuries.
• A significant collection of paintings by the seascape folk painter Aristeides Glykas.
