Heroon of Calydon - Overview

The monument, dated to 100 B.C. is considered to be the tomb of Leon of Calydon who was worshipped as a hero. The building was rectangular and had a peristyle courtyard surrounded by rooms on the west, east and south sides. It was entered through a propylon on the north side and included an underground burial chamber with stone, couch-shaped sarcophagi. The Heroon belonged to a cemetery that extended to the SW of the ancient city of Calydon.
The monument was excavated by a Greek-Danish expedition and was published in 1934.
