Vathipetro is 21km south of Iraklion on the Iraklion - Knossos - Arhanes
- Vathipetro road. One km west of Vathipetro is a Minoan villa.
The road continues to the top of Mount Youktas and the Byzantine church of Metamorphosis, Agios Georgios, Agii Pandes, and Agia Zoni. There is a spectacular view of the valley from this point, including the double peaks of Kanli Kastelli and the mountains of western Crete, as well as the Asterousia Mountains in the south.

You can reach the mountain's imposing summit from a road between Arhanes and Vathipetro. From Arhanes the road continues to Vathipetro and in 3km there is a right turn on a roughly paved road to the summit of Mount Youktas (4km). The ancients believed Zeus was buried here, despite his immortality. There is a Minoan sanctuary as well as a Byzantine church at the summit. The view from the top is spectacular as you look down on the city of Iraklion, the island of Dia, the area around Knossos, Archanes, and vineyards and on clear day you can see to the Lefka Ori in western Crete and to the Dikte Mountains in the east.
