PELLA (Ancient city) GIANNITSA - Greek Travel Pages

PELLA, Ancient city, GIANNITSA

Overview

The ancient Macedonian Kings Palace is located in the middle among the three hills overlooking the ancient city, in the northern part, and covers an area of approximately 35,000 square meters. Built in an exquisite and dominant location, the palace is gifted with ideal locality, a wonderful view to the vast plain, the sea and surrounding mountains.
It was a perfectly organized complex in the capital of the Macedonian state, with courtyards and peristyles, luxurious men's quarters, archives, library and mint, warehouses and workshops, worship areas, arena, extended gardens and parks. The palace was impressively complex and magnificent since the king lived here along with the political and administrative mechanism. After the conquest of Macedonia by the Romans in 168 B.C. the palace was no longer the seat of royal power.
