The Municipality of Orestiada was founded by Law 2539/1997 (Kapodistria Plan), consists of 8 Municipal Districts, the former municipality of
1. Orestiada,
the former communities of:
1. Ambelakia,
2. Valtos,
3. Megali Doxipara,
4. Neon Chimonion,
5. Neochorion,
6. Chandras
and the settlement of:
1. Thourion of the former community of Thourion.
Municipality seat is Orestiada, city of the homonymous municipal district. The first authorities were elected in October 1998. The population was 19669 inhabitants, according to the 1991 census.
