The Municipality of Kilkis was founded by Law 2539/1997 (Kapodistria Plan), consists of 10 Municipal Districts, the former municipality of
1. Kilkis,
the former communities of:
1. Vaptistis,
2. Kristoni,
3. Lipsydrion,
4. Megali Vryssi,
5. Melanthion,
6. Messianon,
7. Stavrochorion,
8. Chorygion
and the settlement of:
1. Κastanies of the former community of Kastanies.
Municipality seat is Kilkis, city of the homonymous municipal district. The first authorities were elected in October 1998. The population was 19358 inhabitants, according to the 1991 census.
