The southwestern part of Paros, 12km from Parikia, is the site of the community of Ageria. In old times, this was a small settlement, built on the hill on which stands the old church of Saint George. The name Ageria, or Agairies, or Egairies, is a local one, derived from the rocky walls which separated the cultivated land from the uncultivated. The old, beautiful monastery of Agioi Theodori is the jewel of Ageria. It is built on its summit, and faces the Aegean sea.
