VRISSA (Ancient city) LESVOS
The origin of the name Briseis (or rather of Briseus) is uncertain. Fick writes Breseis, referring it to Bresa, a town in Lesbos, where there was also a Chryse, holding that in the oldest legends both ladies were captured in a raid on Lesbos; see 9.129, 660. To Homer, however, Briseis comes from Lyrnessos, not far from Thebe (19.291-300);

She was the daughter of Phorbas from the island of Lesbos and was captured by Achilles (Il. 9.665).
The island is mentioned by Homer (Il. 24.544, Od. 3.169).
The name or patronymic of a king of the island of Lesbos (Od. 4.343, 17.134).
He was the father of Diomede and king of Lesvos (Il. 9.665).
A son of Aeolus and king of Lesbos(Il. 24.544).
Macareus, (Makareus). A son of Aeolus, who committed incest with his sister Canace. Hence Isse, the daughter of Macareus, is called Macareis. After the suicide of Canace, Macareus fled to Delphi, where he became the priest of Apollo. His story is told by Ovid in the Heroides, xi.
Macar or Macareus (Makar or Makareus). A son of Helios and Rhodos, or, according to others, a son of Crinacus, who after the murder of Tenages fled from Rhodes to Lesbos. (Hom. Il. xxiv. 544; Diod. v. 56; Plat. de Leg. viii. p. 838; Arnob. adv. Gent. iv. 24; Hgen, ad Hymn. Hom. p. 203.)
Macar. The founder of Lesbos, was a son of Crineus and a grandson of Zeus. (Diod. v. 81.)
Canace (Kanake), a daughter of Aeolus and Enarete, whence she is called Aeolis (Callim. Hymn. in Cer. 100), who had several children by Poseidon. (Apollod. i. 7.3, &c.) She entertained an unnatural love for her brother Macareus, and on this account was killed by her own father; but according to others, she herself, as well as Macareus, put an end to her life. (Hygin. Fab. 238, 242; Ov. Her. 11.)
