Byzantine church of the Panagia Kera

CHROMONASTIRI (Village) RETHYMNO
The Byzantine church of the Panagia Kera has cruciform architecture with a dome on a drum. In front of the church there is a large narthex at right angles to the nave and which is higher than the main part of the church. Between the narthex and the church itself there are two supporting columns in the wall. The church contains frescoes, the most interesting being a large painting of the Virgin Mary. The church's location allows for a marvellous view of the valley.

Agios Eftihios Church

The Byzantine church of Agios Eftihios is a large church that has cruciform architecture with a large dome on the intersection of the nave and transept. The overall architecture of the church is cruciform. The back of the church has a window separated in two by a column. The interior of the church is very beautiful. It is decorated with bricks in the traditional Byzantine manner. Some traces of frescoes still remain in the church which reflect the so-called Macedonian style from Constantinople.

Roman Catholic church

RETHYMNON (Town) CRETE
The modern (1890) building of the Catholic church is at Odos Mesolongiou and Salaminas (Mass: 10:00 Sundays). This church was built to service the small Catholic population of Rethimnon and now the summer visitors. The building itself has an interesting facade with a large window above the door.

Byzantine church of Agios Ioannis Theologos

SELI (Village) RETHYMNO
The village of Seli contains the Byzantine church of Agios Ioannis Theologos. The church has frescoes in it in good condition and is inscribed with the date 1411.

Monasteries

It is situated near the settlement of the same name a few kilometres south of the town of Rethymno in the direction of Roussospiti. This very old monastery is considered to date back to as early as the 14th century. However, at some point it was destroyed and henceforth remained entirely deserted. After restoration works were started in 1989, the monastery was given new life due to the eager activities of the nuns. Today the monastery also represents the heart of folklore traditions, which are protected and preserved by the nuns in the field of handicraft in general and of weaving and embroidering in particular, since it houses a permanent exhibition of needlework produced by the nuns themselves.

The Agia Irini Monastery is located 6km south of the city of Rethimnon, on the Rethimnon - Agia Irini - Mili - Chromonastiri road. This Byzantine monastery had been active until the revolution of 1821, then badly damaged, it was abandoned. In 1970 restoration was started on the church and in 1989 the monastery was reocuppied by nuns. Extensive renovations have made Agia Irini a delightful place to visit, as the cloister as well as the refectory, stables, and wine press have been restored. The fortress-like monastery overlooks Rethimnon.

Monastery of Chalevi

CHROMONASTIRI (Village) RETHYMNO
It is situated near the village of Chromonastiri 12 km from Rethymno. The large, single-aisled church is dedicated to the Holy Virgin. The year 1864 is carved into the lintel. However, the monastery must have existed as early as the 16th or 17th century. Except for the church all other buildings are dilapidated and of course the monastery is deserted. Since 1991 it has been annexed to the monastery of Aghia Irini.
