Churches and Monasteries

The county of Chania is rich in churches & monasteries with a very important presence in Byzantine Art. Here are mentioned about 300 Byzantine churches. A unique view for the traveler are the churches. Small, lonely churches, built on green mountainsides, located in hard-to-reach gorges or on deserted rocks made wet by waves ore, with the harmony of their lines, the peace & hospitality they convey in the deserted setting, resorts for the soul. Important monasteries (16th-17the cent.) are located at the Acrotiri Northeast of the town of Chania: the convent of the Holy Trinity, which has a small museum, the convent of the Mastress of the Angels (Gounernetto). Two women’s convents that of St. John (Korakies) with a small museum & that of Chryssopigi with a hagiography workshop. Other monasteries are: the convent Gonia (17th cent.) in Kolymbari, the convent of St. John in Pasinos and the historic Convent of Chryssoskalitissa, near Elafonissi.
