The Museum
was founded in 1991 by the most famous shadow player in Greece Eugenios Spatharis, a successful outcome of long-term and persisting efforts.
The Museum exhibits derived from his own collections, his father's Sotiris Spatharis and other Shadow Theatre artists as well.
The permanent exhibition - namely figures, accessories and stage material of the Greek shadow theatre - presents the history and evolution
of this traditional popular art from 1860 to the present. The Museum also possesses a library, an archive of press cuttings, photos and posters.
According to Eygenios Spatharis the aim of the museum "is not to show a lifeless exhibition of shadows...On the contrary, the intention is to keep them alive in a permanent hospitable home in which all young and old visitors will be accepted to amuse themselves and leave satisfied. Karagiozis' friends can also travel in the magic world of shadows learning about the performances and their history."
Some of the most important exhibits of the museum are:
• The classical figure of Karaghiozis,
drawn by Eugenios Spatharis. The first coloured figure was created in 1920.
• Black and
white figures of the traditional Shadow Theatre of the period 1900-1930.
• Coloured
shadow theatre figures of various types.

The Natural History Museum
was founded in 1964 by Angelos and Niki Goulandris, as a private non profit institution
devoted to study and protection of natural environment, the first museum of its kind to be established in Greece.
The Museum galleries host extensive collections of animal and plant fossils,
representative samples of contemporary flora and fauna from all over the Greek territory and a rich minerals and rock collection.
The exhibits illustrate the evolution and biodiversity of ecosystems,
while a special display is dedicated to man’s first appearance and development on earth.
The exhibition galleries encompass the following fields:
• Botany
• Zoology
• Entomology
• Marine Biology
• Ornithology
• Herpetology
• Geology
• Paleontology
Furthermore the Institute’s primary mission - and its founders’ vision -
is to promote the ecological principals and the environmental protection ethics.
Special displays are dedicated to two marine species threatened by extinction,
the Mediterranean monk seal
(Monachus monachus) - a rare and one of the most endangered mammals in the world -
and the Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta).
In addition the Museum has developed a continuous and eminent scientific activity,
relating to field research, collection, identification and recording of species, landscape studies of areas of particular environmental interest,
digitization of the museum collections, publications, collaborations with other scientific centres and institutes in Greece and abroad.
The Goulandris Natural History Museum was also the first to initiate environmental education in Greece and today plays a pivotal role in this field
by the implementation of programs, projects and workshops, addressed to pre-school and school-aged children, but also to the general public.
Ever since its foundation the activities of the Museum focus on raising awareness about the critical environmental issues
and cultivating attitudes favouring the preservation of natural wealth.

The Museum was founded in 1979 and belongs to the Greek Railways Organization.
Its aim is to preserve samples of the technological development of the means of
transportation in Greece. Among the Museum's exhibits are included:
• Steam lecomotives dating from 1884
• Steam locomotives of mine-trains
• Wagons of old trains, royal riages and the smoking car of the train of the
sultan Abdul Aziz
• Athenian tramways of the past decades
• Hand-and-foot operated draeseners
• Models and photographic material
• Instruments, printing implements, tickets, uniforms and mechanics' tools
of the 19th century.

The Cartoon Museum has been in operation since 1994. It is administered by the Municipality of Athens in collaboration with a group of Greek cartoonists.
The main Museum collection comprises the Permanent Exhibition of Cartoons,
namely carricatures, comic strips and other kinds of sketches by Greek and foreign cartoonists. There is also a library and archives.
The Cartoon Museum is housed in the neoclassical Villa Treiber near the New Town Hall.
Treiber was a German philhellene who came to Greece during the Greek War of Independence in 1821
and remained in the country as a chief medical officer of the Greek Army.
Some of the most important exhibits of the museum are:
Comic strips by K. Grammatopoulos, "Proteus and Andromeda", on a script by B. Rotas,
from the series "Illustrated Classics" published by Atlantis.
Caricatures of cartoonists of the early years of the 20th century, from the satyrical review "Satanas".

The Museum building was constructed in 1956.
The collections include:
• Finds from the Late Mycenaean cemetery at Perati.
• Geometric pottery
from the cemeteries of Myrrhinous, Anavyssos and other areas of Mesogeia.
• Archaic and Classical pottery and minor objects (votive offerings from the sanctuary of Artemis).
• Collections of sculptures (statues, reliefs) from the sanctuary of Artemis Vrauronia.
• Votive and funerary reliefs of the Classical period, found in the region of Mesogeia
The most important items of the exhibition are:
• Stirrup jar from the cementery of Perati. It depicts octopiand fishes among close style decoration. Docted to late Helladic IIIc period (1200 - 1000 B.C.).
• Votive relief to Artemis. The goddess is represented seated with a deer, welcoming the pilgrims. The relief was found in the sanctuary and dates to the 4th century B.C.
• Votive relief, offered to the sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia. The goddess is represented holding a dada and stands behind her altar. Beside the goddess, Demeter and Kore
are depicted as they welcome the pilgrims bearing the animals to be sacrificed. Dated to the 4th century B.C.
• Statuette of an "arktos". The young girl is represented clad in a chiton and himation,
holding a rabbit in her right hand. Dated to the 4th century B.C.
• "The votive relief of the Gods". It bears the representation of a group of gods,
including Zeus, Leto, Apollo and Artemis. Dated to the end of the 5th century B.C.
• Statue of a boy. He holds a fruit in his right hand and a bird in his left. Dated to the 4th century B.C.

The Museum was founded in 1977 and was housed in the atelier of the famous Greek painter George Gounaropoulos (1890-1977), in the Zografou area of Athens.
In 1990 the Museum was expanded by the addition of a new building, which serves as Art and Culture Center, hosting art exhibitions, lectures and cultural events.
In the old atelier of the painter (which has been listed by the Greek State as conservation-worthy property) are exhibited his works,
including oil paintings, drawings done in crayon and fusain, studies and also personal items.

The Museum was inaugurated on May 1990 and constitutes a functional museum of
modern art, able to house important exhibitions. The building, erected in 1926,
was the holiday home of the great actress of the Greek Theatre, Marika Kotopouli.
During the German occupation, the house was requisitioned by the Germans. Later
it housed the Police Station of the area. Finally, with the support of the Association
of Greek Actors, the Municipality, undertook to restore the house, which was classified
as a listed building, and to show off its distinctive architecture and its beautiful
interiors, where cultural activities of a high calibre are held today. This Museum
does not exhibit objects related to Kotopouli. The building itself is of value
as a museum; for the time being it welcomes temporary exhibitions, while it offers
a permanent home to the artistic collection of Constantinos Ioannides.
