The Municipality of Messolongi was founded by Law 2539/1997 (Kapodistria Plan), consists of 8 Municipal Districts, the former municipality of
1. Messolongi
and the former communities of:
1. Agios Georgios,
2. Agios Thomas,
3. Ano Koudounion,
4. Ellinika,
5. Evinochorion,
6. Moussoura,
7. Retsina.
Municipality seat is Messolongi, city of the homonymous municipal district. The first authorities were elected in October 1998. The population was 16859 inhabitants, according to the 1991 census.
