Ο Αλιάκμονας είναι ο μεγαλύτερος σε μήκος ελληνικός ποταμός (297 χλμ.).
Πηγάζει και εκβάλλει σε ελληνικό έδαφος. Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του ρέει στη Δ.
Μακεδονία. Σχηματίζεται από τη συμβολή δύο μικρότερων ποταμών, ο ένας από
τους οποίους πηγάζει από τις ανατολικές πλαγιές του Βοίου,
στη θέση Μαύρη Πέτρα και λέγεται Βελίτσα ή Μπέλιτσα. Ο άλλος πηγάζει από το όρος
Βαρνούς ή Μπέλα Βόδα στην
περιοχή Πισοδερίου Φλωρίνης και λέγεται Ζέλοβα ή Ζέλοβο ή Ζάλαβο. Ο Μπέλιτσα ενώνεται
χαμηλότερα με τον παραπόταμο Μπίστριτσα (Μπρέκτσα) και ΝΔ της Καστοριάς, κοντά
στο χωριό Μανιάκοι, ενώνεται
με το Ζέλοβα για να σχηματίσουν τον Αλιάκμονα. Από εκεί ο ποταμός ακολουθεί ΝΑ
κατεύθυνση και δέχεται από δεξιά τα νερά του όρους Γκρούσα και από τα αριστερά
τον παραπόταμο Δουπιάκο, που μεταφέρει τα πλεονάζοντα νερά της λίμνης
της Καστοριάς. Διασχίζει το λεκανοπέδιο των Γρεβενών, ακολουθώντας πάντα ΝΑ
κατεύθυνση και όταν φτάσει στις βόρειες πλαγιές των Χασίων στρέφεται προς τα ΒΑ,
περνώντας Β των Σερβίων στο οροπέδιο της Κοζάνης, αποστραγγίζοντάς το όπως έκανε
νωρίτερα και στη λεκάνη Καστοριάς - Γρεβενών. Στη συνέχεια περνώντας μεταξύ Πιερίων
και Βερμίου, διασχίζει την πεδιάδα της Ημαθίας και μπαίνει στην πεδιάδα της Θεσσαλονίκης,
όπου δέχεται τα νερά του Εδεσσαίου ή Βόδα. Κατόπιν στρέφεται ΝΑ και χύνεται στο
Θερμαϊκό Κόλπο, κοντά στο
Αιγίνιο. Ο Αλιάκμονας είναι μία από τις πλουσιότερες υδάτινες πηγές της Δ. Μακεδονίας.
Μαζί με τους παραποτάμους του δημιουργεί μια εύφορη πεδινή παραποτάμια περιοχή,
που καλύπτεται από καλλιέργειες και βοσκοτόπια.

The modern Vistriza. An important river in Macedonia, rising in the Tymphaean mountains, forming the boundary between Eordaea and Pieria, and falling into the Thermaic Gulf. Caesar incorrectly makes it the boundary between Macedonia and Thessaly.
Haliacmon, Fl. (Haliakmon, Hesiod, Th. 341; Herod. vii. 127; Scyl.
p. 26; Strab. vii. p. 330; Ptol. iii. 13. § § 15, 18; Caesar B.C. iii. 36; Liv.
xlii. 53; Plin. iv. 10; Claud. B. Get. 179: Vistritza; Turkish, Inje-Kara), a
river of Macedonia, rising in the chain of mountains to which Ptolemy gave the
name of Canalovii. According to Caesar, it formed the line of demarcation between
Macedonia and Thessaly.
In the upper part of its course it takes a SE. direction through Elymiotis,
which it watered; and then, continuing to the NE., formed the boundary between
Pieria, Eordaea, and Emathia, till it discharged itself into the Thermaic gulf.
In the time of Herodotus the Haliacmon was joined by the Lydias, or discharge
of the lake of Pella; but a change has now taken place in the course of the latter,
which joins not the Haliacmon, but the Axius. The Haliacmon itself appears to
have moved its lower course to the E. of late, so that, in time, perhaps all the
three rivers may unite before they join the sea.
The Vistritza, although betraying a Slavonic modification in its termination,
may possibly be a corruption of Astraeus (Aelian, H. A. xv. 1), which was perhaps
the ordinary appellation of the river below the gorges of Beraea, as Haliacmon
was that above them; in the same manner as Injekara and Vistritza are used in
the present day.
Its banks are now confined by artificial dykes to restrain its destructive
inundations, and the river itself is noted at Verria for guliani of immense size:
the same fish grows to enormous dimensions in the lake at Kastoria, which is one
of the sources of the Vistritza. (Leake, Northern Greece, vol. i. pp. 303, 316,
