Ηταν η νεώτερη ελληνική πόλη, που είχε δημιουργηθεί από το συνοικισμό πολλών αρκαδικών πόλεων με σκοπό να προστατευτούν από τη δύναμη των Λακεδαιμόνιων. Επικεφαλής του συνοικισμού ήταν ο Επαμεινώνδας (Παυσ. 8,27,1-2). Τον καιρό του Παυσανία η πόλη ήταν ερειπωμένη στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος της (Παυσ. 8,33,1).

Just ask yourselves at what point you would begin to make your stand against Lacedaemonian injustice with more honor and generosity--with the defence of Megalopolis or with the defence of Messene?
