The Ecclesiastical Museum of the Holy Metropolitan Cathedral of Alexandroupolis is located in the former ‘Leontarideios Greek Urban Boys School’ in the square of Saint Nicolas. It was built in 1909 with the contricution of Anthony Leontaridis, a wealthy businessman from Maronia of Rodope, who upon return from Russia, established himself in Alexandroupolis. The exhibits in the museum are of exceptional importance and value for the history and culture of Thracian Greeks. The exhitits include icons, vestments, sacred vessels, wooden pieces, coins, etc. The hand-written minutes defining the liberation of the city in 1920 are of great historical value. The Museum of Flora and Fauna of Evros Delta is without a doubt one of the most important sights in Alexandroupolis. It was established in 1985 by the Municipality of Alexandroupolis with the use of the embalmed bird and animal collection of Mr. Chris Goudner, a citizen of Alexandroupolis and expert on the Evros Delta and its fauna. At the museum a visitor can admire the large assortment of birds and animals exhibited in a way which portrays the natural environment in which they live. This is done with the necessary changes to the area so that with the appropriate use of materials and the adequate decoration and lighting, the wetlands of the Evros Delta are represented as they actually are. Wetlands of mountainous areas are also represented with animals such as the wild boar, the fox, the wolf, the partridge, etc. The image of the museum is made complete with the photography exhibit including photographs taken in the Delta, which can also be found in the museum.

The Museum
was founded in 1991 by the most famous shadow player in Greece Eugenios Spatharis, a successful outcome of long-term and persisting efforts.
The Museum exhibits derived from his own collections, his father's Sotiris Spatharis and other Shadow Theatre artists as well.

According to Eygenios Spatharis the aim of the museum "is not to show a lifeless exhibition of shadows...On the contrary, the intention is to keep them alive in a permanent hospitable home in which all young and old visitors will be accepted to amuse themselves and leave satisfied. Karagiozis' friends can also travel in the magic world of shadows learning about the performances and their history."

DISPILIO (Village) KASTORIA
7.500 years ago a group of people chose the south bank of the lake
to build with wood and clay a village in or very close to the lake. This Neolithic
community confronts it for hundreds of years the challenges of the ecosystem of
the region by developing a broad spectrum of activities and a special civilization.
The excavation research that the group of Mr G. Ch. Chourmouziades,
professor of AUTH,
started in 1992 brought to light lots of significant findings. Though the study
of these findings there was an effort of reconstructing the image of the prehistoric
lake settlement and creating the first Greek Settlement Museum.
The Settlement Museum of Dispilio goes beyond the limits of a conventional
archaeological exhibition and transforms the archaeological information to a place
where one can experience it. In area of 20.000 square meters that represents the
ecosystem of the lake settlement, the visitor has the possibility to walk on the
wooden platforms of the village, to see the households of the 6th millennium BC
and to see closer the life of the Neolithic inhabitants.
The representation is surrounded by reception and recreation areas
and reflects a modern concept of museums on the level of using the archaeological
information.

The Natural History Museum
was founded in 1964 by Angelos and Niki Goulandris, as a private non profit institution
devoted to study and protection of natural environment, the first museum of its kind to be established in Greece.
The Museum galleries host extensive collections of animal and plant fossils,
representative samples of contemporary flora and fauna from all over the Greek territory and a rich minerals and rock collection.
The exhibits illustrate the evolution and biodiversity of ecosystems,
while a special display is dedicated to man’s first appearance and development on earth.
The exhibition galleries encompass the following fields:
Botany
Zoology
Entomology
Marine Biology
Ornithology
Herpetology
Geology
Paleontology
Furthermore the Institute’s primary mission - and its founders’ vision -
is to promote the ecological principals and the environmental protection ethics.
Special displays are dedicated to two marine species threatened by extinction,
the Mediterranean monk seal
(Monachus monachus) - a rare and one of the most endangered mammals in the world -
and the Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta).
In addition the Museum has developed a continuous and eminent scientific activity,
relating to field research, collection, identification and recording of species, landscape studies of areas of particular environmental interest,
digitization of the museum collections, publications, collaborations with other scientific centres and institutes in Greece and abroad.
The Goulandris Natural History Museum was also the first to initiate environmental education in Greece and today plays a pivotal role in this field
by the implementation of programs, projects and workshops, addressed to pre-school and school-aged children, but also to the general public.
Ever since its foundation the activities of the Museum focus on raising awareness about the critical environmental issues
and cultivating attitudes favouring the preservation of natural wealth.
