EGYSSOS (Ancient city) KATO MISSIA
Aegissus or Aegypsus (Aigissns, Hierocl. p. 637; Aigistos, Procop.
4, 7; Aegypsus, Ov.), a town in Moesia, near the mouth of the Danube. It is mentioned
by Ovid as having been taken from the king of Thrace, at that time under the protection
of Rome, by a sudden incursion of the Getae, and recovered by Vitellius, who was
in command of a Roman army in that quarter. Ovid celebrates the valour displayed
by his friend Vestalis upon the occasion. (Ep. ex Ponto, i. 8. 13, iv.7.21.)
